Not all Pilates is created equal

Published on: 02/2025

At Reformation, we champion a certain vision of Pilates. We are committed to offering classes that resonate with the times, that are enriched by the teachers’ backgrounds, and that engage with other disciplines. Classes that respect the effectiveness and beauty of the method… but also the time and money of our students!

For a long time, machines were reserved for private or semi-private classes.

We opened the studio in 2017 hoping to offer two options. In addition to individual sessions, we aimed to open group classes on machines to allow a larger number of students to benefit from regular training. In New York, many classes were already accommodating around twenty students. We preferred to strike a balance by limiting sessions to between 8 and 12 spots to better support you.

In our studios, we bring together three essential conditions for quality teaching: clear lighting to correct your posture, enough space to move properly, and silence to improve your focus.

Have you noticed? For the past two years, Reformer Pilates has been booming!

It’s making headlines in magazines, topping the lists of sports to try, intersecting with various disciplines, and attracting more and more people. At Reformation, we are delighted! The more followers Pilates has, the better the world will be, that’s for sure!

However, not all Pilates is created equal. Here’s an overview to help you make an informed decision.

Pilates requires focus and precision. It is an art of attention.

This is our vision, our backbone, our signature.

We believe it is crucial to provide you with this framework – not only so that you can reconnect with your breath, your sensations, and yourself – but also to enhance the flow of the class.

To further tailor the experience, we also propose private lessons, both solo and duo. Starting at 50 euros per person, you can benefit from a personalized session that is closely aligned with your specific needs and desires.

These choices define our identity.

We will never offer overpriced classes in dark rooms, with loud music, and too many students.

Another point: not all machines are Pilates!

Some offerings lack nuance and create confusion.

Right now, the Reformer is the star of the magazines. But you may have already heard of its Californian cousin? The Megaformer, developed by Sébastien Lagree. This machine is inspired by the Reformer. And that little word makes all the difference. It is not a Reformer. The exercises developed for it more closely resemble fitness than an advanced Pilates class.

It is an excellent discipline, somewhat steroid-enhanced, for burning calories and building muscle using weights. But if you want to work on elongating your silhouette, sculpting your body, and pushing your limits harmoniously, with Pilates, you are in the right place!

Finally, we draw your attention to a crucial question.

What training has your instructor received?

A lengthy training program, of at least 350 hours, includes anatomy and a wide range of exercises with variations, progressions, or regressions. At Reformation, this expertise makes all the difference. It ensures that your instructor will guide you so that each movement is optimally effective while also proposing new sequences and new choreographies. Three days are not enough to acquire such a repertoire.

In Pilates, you should never be bored! It is, in our opinion, the essential criterion for choosing your class. The best teaching is one that can renew itself over the years. One that challenges you in the long term. One that surprises you. One through which you will surprise yourself!
